Seer Praises Relocation Of Meat Shops Ahead Of Ardh Kumbh In Haridwar, Calls It Essential For Spiritual Sanctity

Haridwar: A prominent seer, Acharya Ayodhya Prasad Shastri has welcomed the proposed decision to relocate all raw meat shops operating within the city’s urban limits to Sarai village on the outskirts ahead of the upcoming Ardh Kumbh, saying the move will help preserve the spiritual sanctity of the holy city and ensure an environment conducive to religious practices.

Speaking to IANS, Acharya Ayodhya Prasad Shastri said that the presence of meat shops in a city that hosts one of the most sacred gatherings of Hindu devotees could disturb the spiritual discipline observed by saints and pilgrims.

“In Haridwar, where the upcoming Kumbh is to be held, many ascetics, sages, and saints will arrive. They will perform various kinds of yajnas, rituals, deep meditation, and vows. Due to their strict observances and spiritual practices, if they happen to see or encounter anything inappropriate, it may lead to a sense of impurity or mental discomfort,” he added.

He emphasised that maintaining a pure and peaceful environment is crucial for those undertaking meditation and spiritual practices during the Kumbh period.

“Therefore, for maintaining inner peace of mind and for the proper observance of truth, vows, and discipline, such an initiative is very necessary. Efforts of this kind will prove to be highly beneficial,” the seer added.

The remarks come as authorities step up preparations for the Ardh Kumbh scheduled in 2027 in Haridwar, which is expected to draw millions of devotees from across the country and abroad.

According to officials, under existing municipal bylaws, the sale and consumption of meat, liquor and eggs are already prohibited within a five-kilometre radius of Har Ki Pauri, one of the most revered ghats in the city.

In line with these norms, the administration has proposed shifting all raw meat shops currently operating within the urban limits of Haridwar to Sarai village on the outskirts, in a bid to streamline arrangements and avoid any disruption to religious sentiments during the mega event.

Meanwhile, Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Anand Vardhan recently reviewed the ongoing preparations during his visit to Haridwar and conducted an on-site inspection of infrastructure works related to the Kumbh Mela.

He directed officials to ensure that all construction and civic works are completed within the stipulated timelines while maintaining high quality standards, underscoring the government’s focus on smooth and efficient arrangement of the religious congregation.

The Ardh Kumbh, held every six years, is a major religious event that transforms Haridwar into a hub of spirituality, attracting saints, and devotees who gather on the banks of the Ganga for holy dips and rituals.
