Puri: A young technician from Ganjam district suffered heatstroke while carrying out repair work on a mobile tower under extreme weather conditions in Puri district, officials said on Friday.
The victim, identified as Sarbeshwar Behera of Polasara in Ganjam district, reportedly fell seriously ill and lost consciousness while working atop the tower near Titip village under Krushnaprasad block.
According to sources, Behera remained stranded on the tower for more than three hours before being rescued. Local youths, along with personnel from the fire brigade, carried out the operation after receiving information about the incident.
He was later brought down safely and rushed to the Krushnaprasad Community Health Centre, where he is currently undergoing treatment in the heatstroke ward. His condition is stated to be under medical supervision.
The incident has raised serious concerns as working in direct sunlight between 11 AM and 2 PM is strictly prohibited during peak summer due to the risk of heat-related illnesses. Despite this, Behera was reportedly instructed to carry out the repair work during the restricted hours.
Authorities have initiated a probe to ascertain who directed the technician to undertake the task and the circumstances leading to the incident.
