Subarnapur: In a tragic incident, an elderly man lost his life after coming into contact with an electrified wire allegedly laid around a farmland to ward off wild animals in Subarnapur district, police said on Tuesday.
The incident occurred in Nuabasti village under Ulunda police station limits. The deceased has been identified as Linga Giri.
According to preliminary reports, Giri had been visiting the house of a local resident, Ishwar Giri, in the village. On Tuesday, he had gone to a nearby agricultural field for routine purposes when he accidentally touched a live electric wire laid along the boundary of the farmland.
Sources said the wire had reportedly been installed by a local farmer as a deterrent against cattle and wild animals that frequently damage crops in the area.
Locals rushed to the spot and rescued Giri, immediately shifting him to the Ulunda Community Health Centre. However, he was declared dead by doctors after initial examination.
On being informed, police reached the scene, recovered the body, and sent it for post-mortem. An investigation has been initiated to ascertain the circumstances leading to the incident, including the legality of the electrified fencing used in the field.
