Koraput: A tourist drowned while bathing at the scenic Rani Duduma Waterfall in Odisha’s Koraput district on Thursday, police said.
The deceased has been identified as Bhabani Shankar Mohanty, a native of Jagatsinghpur district. He was working as an accountant at a private educational institute in Koraput.
According to reports, Mohanty had gone to the waterfall along with three friends on a recreational trip earlier in the day. During the visit, he reportedly entered the water for a bath and accidentally drowned.
His companions made desperate attempts to rescue him but failed. Upon receiving information, police personnel reached the spot and initiated an investigation into the incident. The body has been recovered and further procedures are underway.
Police have detained the three accompanying friends for questioning to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the mishap.
Authorities have reiterated the need for caution while visiting waterfalls and other tourist spots, especially during bathing, as such locations often have strong undercurrents and slippery terrain.
