Bhubaneswar: The famous Danda Yatra (also known as Danda Nacha) one of the most vibrant and spiritually significant folk traditions of Odisha, is currently underway with great enthusiasm across several districts, particularly in Ganjam. However, a disturbing incident has emerged from Sundarpalli village under Dharakot police station limits, casting a shadow on the celebrations.
According to reports, on Wednesday, while the Panchu Danda ritual was being performed, a heated confrontation broke out between two rival Danda troupes. One group was from Hinjilikatu and the other from Purushottampur. What started as a face-off quickly escalated into a physical brawl, with members of both parties allegedly attacking each other using their Danda sticks and other means.
Videos of the violent clash have gone viral on social media, showing chaotic scenes as performers and supporters clashed in the middle of the traditional performance.
The exact reason behind the sudden fight remains unclear. It is not yet known whether it stemmed from a rivalry between the groups, a dispute over performance space, or any other trigger. As of the latest updates, no formal complaint has been lodged with the police regarding the incident.
