Kalahandi: A woman was killed and five others sustained serious injuries in a road accident at Gungunia Chhak under the jurisdiction of Kalampur police station in Kalahandi district on Tuesday.
The deceased has been identified as Minurani Sahu (31), a resident of Mangalpur village under Jaipatna police station.
According to reports, the victims were travelling in an SUV and returning to their village early Tuesday morning after attending a wedding ceremony. Near Gungunia Chhack, the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, which veered off the road and crashed into a roadside tree.
Local residents rushed to the spot immediately after the accident and helped rescue the injured passengers. All six injured persons were taken to Jaipatna Community Health Centre for treatment. However, doctors declared Minurani Sahu brought dead on arrival.
Hospital sources said the condition of some of the injured remains critical, and they are undergoing further treatment.
Police reached the accident site after being informed, initiated an investigation into the incident, and seized the vehicle involved in the crash. A case has been registered, and further inquiry is underway to ascertain the exact cause of the accident.
The incident has cast a pall of gloom over Mangalpur village and surrounding areas.
