Cuttack: A 28-year-old woman and her five-year-old son were killed in an elephant attack in Nuagaon village under Debabhuin Panchayat in Narasinghpur block early today.
The deceased have been identified as Sasmita Nayak, 28, and her son Shreyansu Nayak, 5. According to locals, the elephant attacked the duo when they had gone to their backyard to attend nature’s call. Both were rushed to Hindol Medical College in a critical, bleeding state and later shifted to Angul District Headquarters Hospital, where doctors declared them dead.
The incident triggered tension near Nuagaon Chhak, with villagers gathering in large numbers. Narasinghpur police and forest officials reached the village and met the bereaved family to offer condolences.
The deceased woman’s family alleged that the Forest Department had failed to take steps to drive away the elephant despite frequent visits by the animal to the village. They demanded adequate compensation for the family. Forest and police officials said they are investigating the incident and further action will be taken as per government provisions.
