Malkangiri (Odisha): In a major crackdown on wildlife smuggling, the Forest Department in Malkangiri district seized 761 turtles during a special operation at the Motu checkpost in the Kalimela area, officials said on Thursday.
Acting on a tip-off, forest officials intercepted a suspicious SUV entering Odisha from Andhra Pradesh. A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of a large consignment of turtles, weighing approximately 2,305 kg. The estimated market value of the seized wildlife is around ₹7 lakh.
The vehicle, along with its driver, has been taken into custody. Preliminary investigations suggest that the consignment was being transported to a local broker identified as Shaktipad Gain, a resident of MPV-83 village under Motu police station limits. However, the accused is currently absconding.
Motu Forester Murulidhar Anugulia indicated that the seizure could be linked to a larger inter-state smuggling network. “Further investigation is underway to identify other persons involved in the racket,” he said.
The incident has triggered concern in the Kalimela region, with authorities intensifying surveillance and enforcement measures. The Forest Department has reiterated its commitment to curb illegal wildlife trade and warned of stricter action against offenders.
