Bhubaneswar: In a tragic turn of events, a minor girl who was abducted and later rescued by police in Angul district died by suicide at the Sakhi Centre where she had been placed for safety.
According to police sources, the girl was rescued after her alleged abductor Benupani — a young man with whom she had reportedly eloped and got married — committed suicide on Friday night. The youth allegedly took his own life fearing police action and mental harassment to his parents following the abduction complaint.
Going by the case history, the incident came to light after the girl’s father Manoj Sahu (40) of Samakoi village registered a kidnapping case at Sadar police station in Angul on April 1 accusing Benupani of kidnapping his daughter.
Following the complaint, police launched an investigation and eventually rescued the girl. Both the minor girl and the youth were said to be in a relationship and had married. After the rescue, the girl was kept at the Sakhi Centre in Angul under police supervision. However, on Friday night, the girl was died by suicide inside the Centre, sending shockwaves in the area.
Meanwhile, police are examining the circumstances surrounding the two suicides.
