Bhubaneswar: In a tragic incident, an elderly couple allegedly died by suicide due to overwhelming debt burden in Kalasuta village under Jharabandh Panchayat of Gangapur police station limits in Ganjam district.

The deceased have been identified as Simanchal Bisoyi (66) and his wife Namita Bisoyi (61). Police said the couple hanged themselves inside their house when no one else was at home.

Upon being informed, Gangapur police reached the spot, recovered the bodies, and initiated an investigation.

Police investigation revealed that the couple was reportedly under severe mental stress in recent times. A few days ago, their only son died due to heart attack. The family also has five daughters. On April 21, their youngest daughter got married, which added to their financial worries.

According to locals, the elderly couple was extremely distressed over their son’s sudden death and the heavy debt they had accumulated. Unable to bear the burden any longer, they chose to end their lives by hanging when they were all alone.

This heart-wrenching incident has sent shockwaves through the village and surrounding areas.

Police have started a detailed probe into the matter and are questioning family members and locals to understand the exact circumstances leading to the double suicide.
