Jajpur: Police have arrested five persons, including three minors, for allegedly assaulting two youths at gunpoint and robbing them of cameras and mobile phones in Jajpur district, an officer said on Monday.
Addressing a presser, Jajpur Road SDPO Sarat Chandra Patra told reporters that the police have recovered two cameras, two motorcycles, four mobile phones and a firearm used in the crime from the accused.
According to police, the incident took place on the night of April 24 when Biswajit Sahu of Chaishantha village under Bari police limits, along with his friend Biswajit Dhir, had travelled to Koliatha village under Mahanga police station in neighbouring Cuttack district to attend a wedding function.
After photographing the event, the duo were returning home on a motorcycle when they were intercepted on the Areikana–Anka road by the accused. The assailants allegedly threatened them with a gun, physically assaulted them and robbed them of two cameras and a mobile phone before fleeing the spot.
Based on a complaint lodged by Sahu, Balichandrapur police registered a case and launched an investigation.
Two police teams, led by Inspector-in-Charge Dilip Kumar Mohanty and Sub-Inspector Deepalisa Nayak, were formed under the supervision of senior officers to trace the culprits. The accused were apprehended during a late-night operation on Sunday, police said.
The two adult accused, identified as Shiv Prasad Samal (22) of Bharatpur village and Chinmay Mallick (21) of Koliatha village, were produced in court on Monday. The three minors were presented before the Juvenile Justice Board, officials added.
Police said further investigation into the case is underway.
