Bhubaneswar: The premier handloom cooperative organisation of Odisha, Boyanika, today celebrated its 70th Foundation Day, marking a significant milestone in the state’s cultural and economic history. The occasion highlighted seven decades of sustained efforts to preserve Odisha’s rich handloom heritage while empowering the weaving communities associated with it.
Speaking on the occasion, Cooperation, Handlooms, Textiles & Handicrafts Minister Pradeep Bal Samanta said Odisha’s handloom tradition is a living expression of its culture, identity, and heritage. He noted that the sector provides livelihoods to thousands of weavers and plays a crucial role in strengthening the rural economy.
Inaugurating the celebrations at the Boyanika Exclusive branch in Boyan Bhawan, he added that Boyanika has emerged as a symbol of trust, reliability, pride, self-reliance, and excellence, and continues to serve as a distinguished ambassador of Odisha’s handwoven legacy.
Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Handlooms, Textiles and Handicrafts Department, Guha Poonam Tapas Kumar, who attended the event as Guest of Honour, stated that Boyanika has earned a strong reputation as a trusted institution over its seven-decade journey.
To mark the occasion, Boyanika announced a special promotional offer of an additional 10% rebate over the existing 20% discount, providing a total benefit of 30% on handloom products. The initiative is expected to boost customer engagement while directly enhancing the income of the weaving community.
For the financial year 2025–26, Boyanika recorded a turnover of Rs 233.56 crore and has set a target of Rs 280 crore for 2026–27. The organisation aims to achieve this through retail expansion, digital integration, and innovative marketing strategies.
Officials present at the event included Somesh Kumar Upadhyay, Director of Textiles & Handloom, Odisha; Prakash Chandra Meher, President, Boyanika; Nivedita Prusty, Managing Director, Boyanika; along with senior officers of the department and Boyanika.
With its legacy rooted in tradition and its vision aligned with future growth, Boyanika continues to uphold and promote Odisha’s handloom heritage with pride and purpose.
