Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds for most districts of Odisha from May 7 to May 13.
For May 7, the IMD has issued yellow warning to Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundergarh, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Angul, Dhenkanal, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangapur districts predicting thunderstorms accompanied with lightning and gusty surface wind (wind speed reaching upto 40-50 kmph).
Besides, thunderstorms accompanied with lightning and gusty surface wind (wind speed reaching upto 30-40 kmph) are very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir on May 7.
Yellow Warning for thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) at one or two places over Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri on May 8.
According to IMD’s prediction for May 9, yellow warning for thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) likely over Balasore, Bhadrak, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar.
Going by IMD’s forecast for May 10, Balasore, Bhadrak, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundergarh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal and Nabarangapur
For May 11, yellow warning for thunderstorm with lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph)are likely to occur over Balasore, Bhadrak, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundergarh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangapur, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Angul, Dhenkanal, Boudh, Nayagarh, Khurda and Puri.
For May 12 and May 13, IMD issued yellow warning for Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri predicting thunderstorms with lightning.
The IMD has advised people to remain cautious of lightning strikes, strong winds, and possible damage to loose structures, trees, and standing crops during this period. Farmers and outdoor workers have been asked to take necessary precautions.
People are advised to avoid open fields, tall trees, and unsafe shelters during thunderstorms.
