Indus Water Treaty Remains In Abeyance Over Pakistan’s Support For Cross-Border Terrorism: MEA

New Delhi: Reiterating its consistent position on the Indus Water Treaty (IWT), India on Thursday said that the agreement remains in abeyance due to Pakistan’s continued sponsorship of cross-border terrorism.

Addressing a weekly media briefing in New Delhi, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that Islamabad must “credibly and irrevocably” end such support.

“Our position on the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) has been consistent. IWT stands in abeyance in response to Pakistan’s sponsorship of cross-border terrorism. Pakistan must credibly and irrevocably abjure its support for cross-border terrorism,” he stated.

India on Thursday is observing the first anniversary of Operation Sindoor, a decisive military action carried out by Indian armed forces on May 7 last year against the high-value terror infrastructures and terrorists across Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and Pakistan, following the heinous Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, 2025.

Marking the anniversary, the MEA spokesperson stated that Pakistan has long treated cross-border terrorism as an instrument of state policy. He asserted that India has every right to defend itself while continuing to work towards strengthening the global fight against terrorism.

“Today, we are marking the first anniversary of Operation Sindoor. The entire world saw the Pahalgam terrorist attack for what it was. We gave a befitting reply to Pakistan for its sponsorship of cross-border terrorism. The world knows that cross-border terrorism has long been used by Pakistan as an instrument of state policy. We in India have every right to defend ourselves against terrorism. We will continue to work to strengthen the global fight against terrorism,” he added.

External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar on Thursday said that Operation Sindoor reflected India’s decisive response to cross-border terrorism and ensured accountability for such actions.

He emphasised that the government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi remains firmly committed to maintaining a zero-tolerance policy against terrorism.

“A year ago, Operation Sindoor demonstrated the nation’s resolve to defend itself against cross-border terrorism from Pakistan. With its decisive actions, India ensured accountability for terrorist actions. And underlined that such a serious threat to peace and security will be effectively countered. Under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi, India stands strong and determined to convey a message of zero tolerance for terrorism,” the EAM posted on X.
