Dhenkanal: A former Odisha Special Armed Police (OSAP) constable on Saturday climbed atop a mobile tower in front of the Town Police Station here in Dhenkanal district and threatened to commit suicide after years of alleged harassment demanding reinstatement in service and financial assistance for his mother’s treatment.
The youth has been identified as Rudra Narayan Das of Sogar village under Kamakhyanagar police station limits in Dhenkanal district.
According to reports, the incident occurred today when Rudra climbed the tower and created a tense situation.
Till the last report came in, fire services personnel have reached the spot and are trying to bring him down safely.
According to sources, Rudra Narayan Das was appointed as a constable in the OSAP in 2018. During training, he fell ill and was sent on medical rest by doctors. After he recovered and reported back, he was dismissed from service. Since then, he has been repeatedly approaching the district administration, departmental authorities, and even the Chief Minister’s office seeking reinstatement, but his efforts yielded no results.
He also claimed to have knocked the doors of the court but could not pursue the case due to lack of money. Frustrated and desperate, Das had also walked from Dhenkanal to Bhubaneswar to meet the Chief Minister. He also met senior officers of the Battalion in Dhenkanal but alleged that no one listened to his grievances.
Being the only educated son of poor and ailing parents, Das said he was unable to provide medical treatment for them. That’s not all. He had also written to the President, Governor, Prime Minister, Chief Minister, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, and district administration seeking permission for euthanasia (mercy death).
The situation remains tense as negotiations are underway to persuade him to come down safely.
