Bhubaneswar: Four persons, including a nine-month-old child and a woman, were killed in two separate road accidents in southern Odisha on Saturday, police said.
In Rayagada district, a couple died after a car allegedly rammed into their two-wheeler near Krushna Nagar under Kalyansinghpur police limits in the afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Deba Bhatra and Shakuntala Bhatra of Tandipur Nadisahi village.
Following the accident, tension prevailed along State Highway-46 as local residents staged a road blockade, alleging that the vehicle involved in the crash fled the spot without stopping. Police personnel later reached the site, pacified the protesters, cleared the blockade and sent the bodies for post-mortem examination.
In another incident in Malkangiri district, a man and his nine-month-old son were killed after the car they were travelling in crashed into a stationary truck near Mathili police station limits.
According to reports, the family was returning home after attending a relative’s ring ceremony when the mishap occurred. The car was reportedly on its way towards Koraput at the time of the accident.
Three women travelling in the vehicle sustained injuries and narrowly escaped with their lives. Fire Service personnel reached the spot, rescued the injured and recovered the bodies from the mangled vehicle.
Police have initiated investigations into both incidents.
