Jharsuguda: One person was killed and another critically injured after a group of unidentified youths allegedly attacked them with a bhujali near Belpahar gate in Jharsuguda district on Sunday evening, police said.
The deceased has been identified as Rahul Mahat, while the injured youth, Akash Sahu, is undergoing treatment at the district headquarters hospital in Jharsuguda.
According to preliminary information, both Rahul and Akash were students of Junadihi College in Belpahar. The attack took place near the Belpahar gate area when four unidentified youths allegedly arrived in a car and assaulted the duo with sharp weapons before fleeing the spot.
Locals rushed the injured youths to Lakhanpur hospital. However, Rahul Mahat succumbed to his injuries during treatment. Akash Sahu, whose condition is stated to be critical, was later shifted to the Jharsuguda district headquarters hospital for advanced treatment.
Senior police officials, including the Jharsuguda Superintendent of Police, the Brajrajnagar SDPO, and Belpahar police personnel, reached the spot and launched an investigation into the incident.
Police have begun efforts to identify and trace the attackers. The motive behind the assault is yet to be ascertained.
