Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Crime Branch has arrested the main culprit, Ranjit Patra alias Chinu (24), in connection with the sensational murder which took place on May 7 at Bhingarpur-Kaja area under Balianta Police Station in Khordha district.
According to a release issued by the CID Crime Branch today, Ranjit Patra of Gangeswargada under Sadar police limits in Cuttack was arrested based on substantial evidence collected during the investigation. Investigation has revealed that the accused, after tying the hands and legs of the victim with ropes, assaulted him on the head — a vital part of the body — with a bamboo stick, leading to his death.
With this arrest, the total number of accused persons arrested in the case has reached 13. Out of them, 11 were earlier arrested by the local police. Another accused, Bunty alias Judhisthira Jena (22), was arrested by the Crime Branch on May 11.
The case was registered under Sections 103(1) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. The Crime Branch took over the investigation following directions from the state government.
Investigation into the case is continuing on a priority basis, and efforts are on to trace and arrest the remaining accused persons involved in the crime.
