Godda (Jharkhand): A three-year-old girl was allegedly strangled to death, and her body dumped into a well in Jharkhand’s Godda district, police said on Friday.

Two accused have been arrested in connection with the incident.

The incident took place in Makundi Santhali Tola under the Mufassil police station area, creating panic among local residents.

The deceased was identified as Nisha Soren, 3, daughter of Ramesh Soren. She had been staying at her maternal grandmother’s house in the village for the past few days. Her native village is Ramla Santhali Tola in the same police station area.

According to police, Nisha had gone missing on Thursday afternoon. Her family members and villagers launched a search operation but failed to trace her till late at night.

During the search around midnight, some villagers noticed a man carrying a sack near a well. Suspecting foul play, they stopped him and questioned him. The villagers alleged that the man had secretly thrown the sack into the well and was attempting to flee.

On being questioned, the man reportedly confessed that the sack contained the girl’s body. Villagers then retrieved the body from the well.

The accused, identified as Prem Murmu, also allegedly disclosed the name of his accomplice, identified as Jarmen Soren. Following this, villagers caught both accused and allegedly thrashed them before informing the police.

After receiving information, Mufassil police station in-charge Anand Saha reached the spot along with a police team. The two accused were rescued and admitted to Sadar Hospital for treatment.

Police have sent the girl’s body for post-mortem examination.

Saha said that the two accused, both residents of the neighbourhood, allegedly strangled the child to death. The motive behind the murder is yet to be established, and both accused are being interrogated.
