Bhubaneswar: A wanted criminal, Dipuna Nayak, was arrested after an encounter with Gopalpur police on Saturday. He sustained a bullet injury to his leg during the operation and has been admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur for treatment.
According to reports, Nayak is a history-sheeter with multiple cases registered against him, including charges of murder, robbery, and loot. He was being tracked in connection with an assault case near the Berhampur–Gopalpur overbridge, where a local resident was allegedly attacked and pushed from the structure.
The victim, identified as Shyam Behera of Dhanamera Sahi under Badabazar police limits, was sitting on the overbridge when a group of miscreants reportedly assaulted him and pushed him down. He sustained serious injuries and was shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur for treatment.
Following the incident, Gopalpur police launched an investigation and analyzed CCTV footage from the area to identify the accused. Acting on specific inputs, a police team traced Nayak’s location and moved in to apprehend him.
During the operation, Nayak reportedly attempted to flee and resisted arrest, leading to an encounter in which he sustained a bullet injury to his leg. He was subsequently taken into custody and shifted to the hospital.
Further investigation is underway to identify and arrest others involved in the assault case.
