Bhubaneswar:  In a tragic road accident, two women lost their lives and three others were critically injured when their car collided head-on with a trailer on the Jhitikiguda stretch of National Highway in Papadahandi Block of Nabarangpur district today.

The deceased and injured belonged to one family from Andhra Pradesh. According to police, the family — comprising two women, two men, and a child — was returning from Puri to their in-laws’ house in Nabarangpur in a car.

The fatal collision occurred when a trailer moving towards Kalahandi hit the car head-on. The impact was so severe that the car was badly damaged. Police and fire service personnel rushed to the spot and rescued all five occupants. They were immediately shifted to the Papadahandi Community Health Centre.

After initial treatment, doctors declared the two women dead. The condition of the remaining three persons (two men and one child) is stated to be critical, and they have been referred to Nabarangpur District Headquarters Hospital for advanced medical care.

Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the cause of the accident. Further details regarding the identity of the deceased and injured are awaited.
