Bhubaneswar: In a bid to strengthen law and order and reassure the public following three encounters reported within nine days in Berhampur town, police conducted a flag march in the Bada Bazaar police station area on Monday evening.
Around 500 police personnel participated in the exercise, which was led by Inspector General of Police (Southern Range) Niti Sekhar and Berhampur Superintendent of Police Saravana Vivek M. The flag march covered sensitive pockets under the Bada Bazaar police limits as part of heightened security measures.
Police officials said the exercise was aimed at maintaining visible policing in the area and instilling confidence among residents.
Speaking to reporters, IG Niti Sekhar said the flag march was a routine and preventive exercise with no special circumstances attached to it.
“This is a routine intensive flag march and there is nothing special about it. The objective is to create confidence among the public and assure them that police are present to ensure their safety. We are strengthening patrolling and maintaining heightened alertness to deter criminal activity. The message is that we are here for everyone and we are performing our basic duties,” he said.
