Bhubaneswar: Police arrested the prime accused, Samulya Jena, from a relative’s house in the Balichandrapur police station area in connection with the brutal assault on a couple after the wife gave birth to twin daughters in Mahanga block.
According to reports, Samulya was produced in court on Monday and has been sent to judicial custody after his bail application was rejected. The incident occurred in Pasulunda village under Mahanga block in Cuttack district.
According to police, Parbati Jena, daughter of Ajay Jena from Kahnupur village, was married to Chandra Sekhar Jena of Pasulunda four years ago. The couple recently became parents to twin girls. However, the in-laws were reportedly unhappy with the birth of two daughters. Parbati’s father-in-law Samulya Jena, mother-in-law, and sister-in-law allegedly started harassing and torturing her both mentally and physically after she became a mother of two twin daughters.
The situation escalated when the family members brutally assaulted Parbati and her husband Chandra Sekhar in full public view on the village road. The couple, along with their newborn twin daughters, was also thrown out of the house.
When Parbati’s father and brother tried to intervene, they were also allegedly abused and attacked. The mother-in-law reportedly refused to hold the newborns and made derogatory comments. Based on the complaint lodged by Parbati and Chandra Sekhar at Mahanga Police Station, a case was registered.
Though Samulya Jena was arrested, the other two accused — the mother-in-law and sister-in-law — are still absconding. Police have launched raids at various places to nab them.
