Bhubaneswar: In a major breakthrough, the Special Crime Unit (SCU) of Bhubaneswar Police shot notorious criminal and drug peddler Pupun Majhi in an encounter in the Info Valley area on Wednesday.
According to police sources, a team of the Special Crime Unit intercepted Majhi during a raid. The criminal opened fire at the police team while attempting to escape. In retaliation, the police team fired back, injuring Majhi. He was overpowered and immediately rushed to Capital Hospital for treatment. Later, due to his critical condition, he was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.
Police recovered 25 grams of brown sugar, one pistol, five live rounds of ammunition, and a motorcycle from his possession.
Majhi, who hails from Buguda in Ganjam district, already faces over 20 serious cases in his home district.
Police have also identified several criminal cases registered against him in the state capital Bhubaneswar.
The Special Crime Unit had been tracking Majhi for his involvement in drug trafficking and other serious offences in the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.
Further investigation is underway.
