Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday reviewed the progress of Vedanta Limited’s proposed projects in Odisha worth more than ₹1 lakh crore during a meeting with Vedanta Group Chairman Anil Agarwal at Lok Seva Bhavan in Bhubaneswar.

The meeting focused on expediting the implementation of the company’s upcoming industrial projects in the state. Vedanta, regarded as one of the largest investors in Odisha, has planned major investments across the aluminium, power, mining and downstream manufacturing sectors.

The proposed projects include a 6 million tonne alumina refinery in Rayagada district, a 3 million tonne aluminium smelter along with a 6000 MW power project in Dhenkanal district, a downstream aluminium park, and integrated coal and bauxite-based industries.

According to officials, the projects are expected to significantly strengthen Odisha’s industrial ecosystem and position the state as a major global aluminium production hub. The downstream aluminium park planned near the proposed smelter will manufacture advanced aluminium products catering to sectors such as aerospace, electric vehicles and defence.

The initiatives are also expected to generate lakhs of employment opportunities and promote the growth of thousands of MSMEs in the state.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister said the investments would create substantial opportunities for Odisha’s youth and contribute to balanced regional development, particularly in central and southern Odisha. He directed officials to review the progress of the projects every 15 days and ensure timely commencement of work.

Majhi further said the projects would accelerate Odisha’s journey towards becoming a $500 billion economy by 2036 while boosting infrastructure and economic activities in the state.

Officials informed the meeting that land has already been allotted for the proposed smelter and power plant in Dhenkanal as well as the alumina refinery in Rayagada. Development of supporting infrastructure and other facilities is progressing smoothly.

Vedanta is also planning to operationalise its new coal block within the current year, while the Railway Ministry has approved a proposed rail connectivity project for the upcoming bauxite mine.

Speaking during the meeting, Agarwal said the projects would bring transformative changes to Odisha’s economy by creating large-scale employment, empowering local industries and building a future-ready industrial ecosystem. He thanked the state government for its support and assured that Vedanta would remain a committed partner in Odisha’s development.

The meeting was attended by Additional Chief Secretary, Industries Department, Hemant Sharma, Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister Saswata Mishra, Additional Chief Secretary, Revenue Department, Arabinda Padhee, and senior officials of the Vedanta Group.
