Balasore: A major accident occurred at Gopinathpur Railway Station in Nilgiri area of Balasore district on Thursday after a crane engaged in loading railway sleepers onto a goods train collapsed onto wagons of two freight trains, sources said.
According to reports, the incident took place in the afternoon while sleepers from a nearby sleeper manufacturing unit were being loaded onto a goods train at the station. During the operation, the crane suddenly lost balance and fell onto the wagons of two goods trains stationed on adjacent tracks.
The mishap also disrupted power supply at the railway station, affecting train operations in the section. Passenger train services remained suspended for a few hours following the incident, railway sources said.
One worker engaged in the loading operation reportedly fell during the accident and sustained minor injuries. He was provided preliminary treatment and is stated to be out of danger.
Railway officials and technical teams later reached the spot and launched restoration work to clear the tracks and restore power supply. Repair work was underway at the time of filing the report.
