Berhampur: In a swift administrative action, the Inspector General of Police, Southern Range, Berhampur, has ordered the suspension of three police personnel and the withdrawal of an ASP from his post following a preliminary enquiry into the alleged custodial death of Susanta Sahu at Kabisuryanagar Police Station in Ganjam district.
According to an official letter issued on June 1, 2026, Nitesh Kumar Mishra, IPS, Assistant Superintendent of Police (Under Training), who was holding independent charge of Kabisuryanagar Police Station, has been withdrawn to the District Police Headquarters in Ganjam. The Superintendent of Police, Ganjam, has been directed to post a suitable substitute in his place.
The letter further states that Sub-Inspector Sameer Kumar Rout of Kabisuryanagar Police Station, Assistant Sub-Inspector Baikuntha Jena of Balichai Outpost, and Constable 58 Suman Kumar Sahu have been placed under suspension with immediate effect pending further enquiry.
Additionally, Home Guard Krushna Chandra Pradhan (HG/267, Driver) has been barred from any kind of duty, with the Commandant of Home Guards, Ganjam, directed to initiate his disengagement from the HG organisation.
To ensure impartiality in the ongoing enquiry, the SP, Ganjam, has been directed to transfer all other staff posted at Kabisuryanagar PS and Balichai Out Post to other police subdivisions.
The IG’s order specifies that any further criminal or departmental action will be taken based on the outcome of a detailed enquiry into the incident.
The development comes amid concerns over the alleged custodial death of Susanta Sahu, with the police high command moving quickly to address possible lapses at the station level.
