Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD)’s Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar has issued an Orange Alert for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong gusty winds reaching 50-60 kmph in several districts of Odisha over the next few days, even as light to moderate rain or thundershowers are forecast across most parts of the state.
According to the Evening Weather Bulletin issued at 7.00 PM on June 1, conditions remain favourable for the further advance of the southwest monsoon, with the Northern Limit of Monsoon currently passing through several points over the Bay of Bengal. An upper air cyclonic circulation persists over south Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining parts of Jharkhand and Odisha.
Forecasts and Warnings:
Day 1 (Valid till 08:30 AM of June 2): Light to moderate rain or thunderstorm is very likely at one or two places over all districts of Odisha.
Orange Alert: Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (50-60 kmph) likely over Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Rayagada, and Gajapati.
Yellow Alert: Gusty winds (40-50 kmph) in coastal and several central districts including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, etc., and lighter gusts (30-40 kmph) in other areas.
Days 2 to 4 (June 2-5): Rain or thundershowers will continue over many districts, particularly coastal, northern, and southern regions, while dry weather is likely in some interior areas. Orange alerts remain in force for Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj, with widespread yellow warnings for thunderstorms and gusty winds. Hot and humid conditions are also expected at isolated places in coastal districts.
Days 5 to 7 (June 5-8): Rain activity is likely to shift more towards western and northern districts such as Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri. No major warnings (NIL) are issued for Days 6 and 7, with the outlook for the subsequent three days indicating no large change.
Day temperatures are expected to rise gradually by 2-4°C over the next five days across Odisha. For Bhubaneswar and neighbourhood, the forecast is partly cloudy sky with possibility of rain or thunderstorm, with maximum temperature around 39°C and minimum around 28°C.
