Bhubaneswar: Lok Bhavan in Bhubaneswar has further strengthened its renewable energy infrastructure with the addition of a 485-kilowatt-peak (kWp) rooftop solar power plant, taking the total installed solar capacity of the campus to 635 kWp.

The new solar plant was inaugurated today by Odisha Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati. With this addition, Lok Bhavan has taken another step towards promoting clean and green energy within government premises.

The rooftop solar installations have been executed across multiple buildings inside the Lok Bhavan complex. The largest installation of 191 kWp has been set up at the Abhishek Banquet Hall. Other installations include the Campus Garage (85 kWp), Administrative Building (64 kWp), Governor’s Residence (54 kWp), Energy Park (47 kWp), Police Aide-de-Camp (ADC) Residence (20 kWp), Navy ADC Residence (14 kWp), and Wellness Centre (10 kWp).

The project has been implemented by NBCC (India) Limited. The inauguration ceremony was attended by K.P. Mahadevaswamy, Chairman-cum-Managing Director of NBCC, along with senior officials of Lok Bhavan.

Speaking on the occasion, the Governor said the global energy crisis and rising fuel prices have made it necessary to accelerate the shift towards renewable energy sources. He stressed the importance of reducing dependence on imported crude oil and promoting green energy alternatives.

Referring to the appeal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Governor urged citizens to adopt electric vehicles and reduce the use of petrol and diesel. He also noted that the increasing demand for electricity should be met through sustainable sources such as solar energy.

The Governor highlighted initiatives such as the PM Surya Ghar Yojana and Odisha Government subsidy support, which are enabling wider adoption of rooftop solar systems at reduced costs. He added that measures like ethanol blending (E20 and E85) and flex-fuel vehicle promotion are helping reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

In the past year, Lok Bhavan has expanded its green initiatives significantly. The Governor’s official vehicle has already been converted into an electric vehicle. Officials said these efforts are aligned with the broader goal of making Lok Bhavan a net-zero campus, balancing administrative efficiency with environmental sustainability.
