Bhubaneswar: The Cybercrime Unit of Odisha Police has recovered Rs 1.10 crore for a retired professor who lost money in a digital arrest scam, following swift action through the 1930 Cyber Helpline.

The victim, a Bhubaneswar resident, filed a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) on May 15. He alleged that he was duped of over Rs 2.45 crore in February through a digital arrest fraud.

Based on the complaint, the CID Crime Branch registered a case at its cybercrime police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act, 2000. Investigators traced the money trail and identified multiple beneficiary bank accounts linked to the fraud. They immediately requested holds and lien marks on the suspect accounts to block further transfers.

During the probe, the team found Rs 1.10 crore in a private bank account and secured a hold on it. The cybercrime unit then helped the complainant obtain the required court orders. The entire amount was subsequently released and transferred back to the victim’s account. Officials said the recovery highlights the effectiveness of the 1930 Cyber Helpline and NCRP in taking timely action against financial cyber fraud.

According to Odisha Police, 49,426 cyber fraud complaints involving about Rs 432.28 crore were registered on NCRP in the state in 2025. Of this, nearly Rs 68.71 crore was put on hold and Rs 5.31 crore was refunded to complainants.

Till April 30 this year, 16,335 complaints involving around Rs 134.24 crore were registered. About Rs 24.27 crore was put on hold and Rs 2.97 crore was refunded.
