Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a series of weather warnings for Odisha, forecasting thunderstorm activity accompanied by lightning and gusty winds over the next five days.
Orange and Yellow warnings have been issued for several districts from June 27 to July 1.
According to the IMD, on June 27 (Saturday), an orange warning has been issued for thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and gusty surface wind (speed reaching 40-50 kmph) at one or two places over Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Nuapada, Nabarangapur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, and Nayagarh districts.
A Yellow Warning is in place for Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Sonepur, Boudh, Balangir, Kalahandi, and Kandhamal. Heavy rainfall is very likely at one or two places over Koraput, while hot and humid conditions are expected to prevail at isolated places over several coastal and interior districts.
On June 28 (Sunday), orange warning has been issued for Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj districts for thunderstorms with lightning and strong gusty winds (40-50 kmph).
Yellow warning will be in effect for Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangapur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda and Nayagarh districts, with heavy rainfall likely at one or two places over Kandhamal and Koraput.
On June 29 (Monday), a statewide yellow warning has been issued, with thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) very likely at one or two places over almost all districts of Odisha. Heavy rainfall is expected at one or two places over Kandhamal, Rayagada, and Koraput.
On June 30 (Tuesday), an orange warning has been issued for Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, and Gajapati districts for strong thunderstorms with gusty winds up to 40-50 kmph. Yellow Warning will remain in place for the other districts, with heavy rainfall likely over Nabarangapur and Koraput.
On July 1 (Wednesday), the orange warning has been issued for Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, and Gajapati. Yellow Warning will be active in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangapur, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda and Nayagarh districts with heavy rainfall likely over Nabarangapur, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri.
The IMD has advised people to keep a close watch on the weather, take safe shelter during thunderstorm activity to protect themselves from lightning, and follow traffic advisories in urban areas.
