India’s First ‘Algae Tree’ Installed In Bhopal To Boost Urban Air Quality

Bhubaneswar/Bhopal: In a pioneering step towards sustainable urban development, Bhopal has become home to India’s first ‘Algae Tree’, an innovative solar-powered air purification system designed to improve air quality in densely populated cities.

The installation, inaugurated by Madhya Pradesh Cabinet Minister Vishwas Sarang on May 1, 2026, marks a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to adopt technology-driven environmental solutions.

Developed by the Mushroom World Group after nearly two years of research involving more than 50 experts, the Algae Tree is an advanced photobioreactor that utilises millions of microscopic algae to absorb carbon dioxide (CO₂) and release oxygen (O₂) through photosynthesis. Although termed a “tree,” the installation is a compact technological system rather than a natural plant.

The project comes at a time when many Indian cities are witnessing rising levels of air pollution, increasing carbon emissions and a decline in green cover due to rapid urbanisation. Environmental experts believe that algae-based air purification systems can serve as a valuable supplement to conventional tree plantations, particularly in areas where land availability limits large-scale afforestation.

The transparent reactor is filled with water containing microalgae that continuously absorb atmospheric carbon dioxide while producing oxygen. Powered primarily by solar energy, the system functions with minimal dependence on conventional electricity, making it an environmentally sustainable solution. Some units are also equipped with LED lighting to ensure uninterrupted algae growth during periods of limited sunlight.

According to the developers, a single Algae Tree can absorb nearly 1.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, which is claimed to be equivalent to the carbon absorption capacity of around 25 mature trees under favourable conditions. The technology is also designed to reduce concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in its immediate surroundings, thereby contributing to cleaner urban air.

One of the key advantages of the system is its compact design. Unlike conventional tree plantations that require extensive land and several years to mature, the Algae Tree occupies only a small footprint and can be installed at traffic junctions, public parks, commercial complexes, educational institutions and other congested urban locations.

Experts, however, caution that such technological innovations should not be considered substitutes for natural forests or urban tree plantations. Natural trees provide multiple ecological services, including biodiversity conservation, groundwater recharge, soil protection, temperature regulation and wildlife habitat, benefits that artificial systems cannot fully replicate.

Instead, the Algae Tree is expected to complement existing urban greening initiatives by improving air quality in areas where conventional tree planting is either difficult or impossible.

With cities across India searching for innovative ways to address pollution and climate change, the success of the Bhopal project could pave the way for similar installations in other urban centres. While technology alone cannot resolve environmental challenges, initiatives such as the Algae Tree demonstrate how scientific innovation can work alongside nature to create cleaner, healthier and more sustainable cities.
