New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Proclaimed Offender (PO) Khalid-Uz-Zaman in West Bengal’s 2021 post-poll violence case from a remote place situated at Yetala village in the Nanded district of Maharashtra, an official said on Monday.

The accused has been at large since the registration of the FIR in 2021, and he has never joined the investigation/trial.

The CBI registered the instant case on September 1, 2021, in compliance of the order of the Calcutta High Court, dated August 19, 2021, by taking over Duttapukur police station FIR No. 286/2021 relating to alleged killing of Hasnur Zaman on May 3,.2021 at North Kalsara village in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.

After investigation, the CBI filed chargesheetst/supplementary charge sheets against 13 accused persons in 2021-22, including Khalid-Uz-Zaman.

The accused was produced before the Competent Court at Dharmabad for Transit Remand. Subsequently, he was scheduled to be taken to Kolkata for production before the Court of Additional Session Judge at Barasat, West Bengal.

Earlier, in a major crackdown on cybercrime networks facilitating “digital arrest” scams, the CBI, under Operation Chakra-VI, constituted 60 special teams and conducted coordinated searches at more than 80 locations across 16 states.

The searches were carried out in Punjab, Gujarat, Delhi, Maharashtra, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Assam, West Bengal, Manipur, Karnataka and Odisha as part of an ongoing investigation aimed at dismantling an organised network involved in more than 200 cases of digital arrest fraud.

During the operation, the CBI arrested two individuals from Chennai and Kolkata for their alleged involvement in creating shell companies and opening and operating mule bank accounts. These accounts were reportedly used to launder around Rs 2 crore of suspected proceeds of crime.
