Bhubaneswar: Western Odisha experienced intense rainfall as the India Meteorological Department recorded very heavy showers in several areas till 8:30 am on July 2, 2026.

According to IMD data, three stations received very heavy rainfall between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm, while 15 stations recorded heavy rainfall ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm.

The highest rainfall was recorded at Ambabhona in Baragarh district, which received 180 mm of rain. This was followed by Jujumara in Sambalpur with 130.8 mm and Atabira in Baragarh with 120 mm.

Other areas that witnessed significant rainfall include Bhatli in Baragarh, Birmaharajpur in Sonepur, Khairmal in Boudh, and several stations in Kandhamal, Balangir, Malkangiri, Keonjhar, Jharsuguda, and Cuttack districts. This fresh spell of heavy rainfall comes as the southwest monsoon remains active over the state due to a cyclonic circulation over the northern Bay of Bengal.

The weather department has already issued multiple alerts for thunderstorms, lightning, and continued rainfall across various parts of Odisha in the coming days.

The intense downpour is likely to cause waterlogging in low-lying areas and may affect normal life and traffic movement in some regions. The IMD has urged people to stay alert and take necessary precautions during this wet spell.
