Baripada: A 15-year-old girl allegedly died by suicide after consuming insecticide when her family snatched and broke her mobile phone in Mayurbhanj district on Thursday.
The incident took place at Gagpal village under Kaptipada police limits. The deceased was the daughter of Durga Naik.
According to preliminary information, the girl was watching videos on her mobile phone at home when her mother and maternal uncle took away the device. Her father had reportedly earlier complained about her excessive mobile phone use and had asked the maternal uncle to seize it.
When the family allegedly snatched and smashed the phone after she refused to hand it over, the girl became upset and threatened to consume poison. She then locked herself inside a room and allegedly drank insecticide kept in the house.
