Bhubaneswar: A Special Vigilance Court in Anugola district on Friday convicted and sentenced a former police official to rigorous imprisonment (RI) in a bribery case.
The court sentenced Chittaranjan Sahoo, former Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police posted at Industrial Police Station, Nisa, Anugola, and later attached to the SDPO Office, Palalahada, to undergo four years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine.
According to an official press release, Sahoo was charge-sheeted by Odisha Vigilance under Sections 13(2) read with 13(1)(d) and 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. He was found guilty of demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000 from a complainant in exchange for the release of his mobile phone.
The Special Judge, Vigilance, Anugola, pronounced the sentence after holding him guilty in the case. Following the verdict, the convict was remanded to jail custody to serve his sentence.
Odisha Vigilance is expected to initiate steps before the competent authority for his dismissal from government service in view of the conviction.
