Bhubaneswar: A rape accused who had been on the run for months was arrested by police in Sundargarh on Wednesday night, just days before his scheduled wedding.
The accused has been identified as Balabhadra Patta alias Bunty, a resident of Kurga village under Sadar Police Station limits.According to police, Balabhadra was accused of raping a young woman in January this year.
Following a complaint from the survivor’s family, Sadar police registered a case and launched a manhunt.
However, Balabhadra managed to evade arrest and remained absconding.During this period, he allegedly made plans to get married.
Sources said the bride-seeing ceremony was completed, the wedding date was fixed for July 12, and arrangements for the reception were also underway.
Acting on specific information, a police team led by Sadar Police Station IIC Soudamini Nag conducted a raid on Wednesday night and arrested Balabhadra from his village. He was produced in court on Thursday.
The court rejected his bail plea and he was remanded to district jail. Police said further investigation into the case is underway.
