Jayapur: The Additional District and Sessions Court here today sentenced a man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) for raping a minor girl, whom he lured with a false promise of marriage. The court also ordered a compensation of Rs. 4 lakh for the survivor.
Judge Sushree Sanghamitra Das convicted Mrityunjay Kadambal, a resident of the Purunagad area, under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Along with the prison term, the court imposed a fine of Rs. 20,000, with an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment (RI) to be served in default of payment.
The court further directed that the survivor be paid a compensation of Rs. 4,00,000 (Four Lakh) through the District Legal Services Authority.
The case (No. 224/2024 and 99/26) was registered at the Jayapur Town Police Station on July 19, 2024, following an incident that took place in the Purunagad area.
According to the prosecution, the convict sexually assaulted the minor after promising to marry her.
