Bhubaneswar: A Special Vigilance Court in Phulbani on Friday sentenced former TPSODL Lineman (Grade-A) Kalu Charan Palleyi to three years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 after convicting him in a bribery case registered by the Odisha Vigilance.
Palleyi, who had served in the office of the Assistant Manager, TPSODL, Tikabali Section in Kandhamal district and was later attached to the TPSODL office at Kotagarh, was found guilty of demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000 from a shopkeeper for providing a new electricity connection to his shop.
The case was registered by the Brahmapur Vigilance Police on November 17, 2022, under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018, following allegations that the lineman had sought illegal gratification to process the electricity connection.
Following the trial, the Special Judge, Vigilance, Phulbani convicted Palleyi and awarded him three years of rigorous imprisonment along with the monetary penalty.
Odisha Vigilance said it will now approach the competent authority to initiate proceedings for Palleyi’s dismissal from service in accordance with rules governing conviction in corruption cases.
