Bhubaneswar: For most people, leaving a secure government job to pursue an uncertain dream would seem like a risky decision. But for Madhusnata Das, a young artist from Odisha, choosing her passion over a stable career turned out to be the defining moment of her life.
Today, her deeply emotional painting of Lord Jagannath has touched thousands of hearts on social media, making her an inspiration for aspiring artists across the state.
Originally from Kendrapada district, Madhusnata is now based in Bhubaneswar, where she pursues art full-time. While her recent viral painting has brought her widespread recognition, the journey behind it has been anything but easy. It is a story of perseverance, family support, setbacks, and an unwavering belief in following one’s heart.
Academically, Madhusnata excelled throughout her student life. She completed her Bachelor’s degree with Honours in Industrial Sociology, with a specialisation in Human Resource Management, from Kendrapada Autonomous College, graduating as the topper of her batch. She later earned a Master’s degree in Industrial Relations and Personnel Management from Brahmapur University.
Her academic achievements did not stop there. She qualified the UGC-NET examination twice and cleared recruitment examinations for several Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), eventually securing a PSU job. However, despite the stability and promising career prospects, she realised that painting was where her true happiness lay.
In a conversation with Ommcom News, Madhusnata said, “Art was always close to my heart. I knew that if I didn’t give it a chance, I would regret it later.”
Her love for painting began during her school days in Class VII. One day, her art teacher asked every student to bring a painting to class. The incident that followed changed her life forever. Instead of criticising her work, the teacher encouraged her to believe in her abilities and patiently guided her through the basics of painting. That encouragement sparked a passion that continued to grow over the years.
Without any formal training, Madhusnata learned different techniques through social media, spending hours practising and improving her skills. Gradually, she began creating portraits of Sai Baba, actor Sushant Singh Rajput, former President Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Mahatma Gandhi, and several other personalities. Many of her works gained attention online, helping her build a loyal audience.
As her popularity grew, commissioned artworks also began coming in.
She still remembers her first paid assignment, for which she earned Rs 2,100. Initially, she accepted only canvas painting orders. Later, a client requested her to paint on a blouse. Since she had never worked on fabric before, she was hesitant. Eventually, she accepted the challenge and successfully completed the order.
The experience encouraged her to explore new forms of art. She later designed sarees inspired by Odisha’s traditional Pattachitra style, with some pieces selling for Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000. Her framed canvas paintings also fetched around Rs 10,000 to Rs 12,000.
Like many independent artists, her journey was filled with disappointments. Some customers placed orders but never made the payment, while others failed to collect the finished artwork. Instead of getting discouraged, Madhusnata chose to give those paintings a new life by redesigning them into fresh creations.
Then came one of the most difficult phases of her life.
For nearly 1.7 years, she was unable to paint. Personal struggles and emotional challenges left her creatively drained, forcing her away from the canvas.
When she finally returned to painting, she wanted her first artwork to be something deeply meaningful.
The result was a stunning portrait of Lord Jagannath, dedicated to her mother.
“My mother often feels sad because she cannot visit the Jagannath Temple as often as she wishes. Through this painting, I wanted her to feel that Mahaprabhu Himself was walking out of the Singha Dwara to meet her and bless her every day at home,” Madhusnata said.
Painted on a 24×16-inch cotton canvas using acrylic colours, the artwork depicts Lord Jagannath emerging from the temple’s Singha Dwara, creating a powerful image of the deity stepping out to bless His devotees.
For Madhusnata, the painting holds a meaning far beyond its artistic beauty.
“On a personal level, I truly feel that this painting was not created by me alone. While painting, I often felt as though Mahaprabhu Jagannath Himself guided my hands and painted His own form through me. That feeling is something I cannot fully explain in words, but it is what makes this artwork the most meaningful creation of my life,” she said.
Interestingly, much of the painting was completed at Ekamra Van in Bhubaneswar, near the historic Lingaraj Temple. As she worked, children playing cricket nearby gathered around her, watching every brushstroke with curiosity. They applauded her work and even requested that she return every day to paint there—an innocent gesture that remains one of her fondest memories.
Soon after uploading a video of the completed artwork on Instagram (@perfect.blender), it went viral. Thousands of people appreciated not only the painting’s beauty but also the devotion and emotion behind it. The overwhelming response marked a new beginning in her artistic journey.
Behind every achievement, Madhusnata says, stands the unwavering support of her family. She credits her parents, younger brother, grandmother, and her maternal uncle’s family for believing in her dreams when few others did. She especially acknowledges her mother and grandmother, whose constant encouragement gave her the strength to keep creating even during life’s most difficult moments.
Looking ahead, Madhusnata dreams of establishing her own art studio—a vibrant creative space where art, culture, and emotions can seamlessly come together. More importantly, she hopes to inspire young artists to believe in themselves and pursue their passion without fear.
“My biggest dream is that, long after I am gone, people will remember me through my art. I want my paintings to continue touching people’s hearts,” she said.
For Madhusnata Das, the journey from a secure PSU career to a life devoted to art has been anything but easy.
Yet every obstacle she overcame, every setback she endured, and every brushstroke she painted brought her closer to the dream she refused to abandon.
Today, that dream lives on through a moving portrait of Lord Jagannath—an artwork that continues to inspire thousands and stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith, perseverance, and passion.
