Bhubaneswar: A police assistant sub-inspector (ASI) has been sentenced to four years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) after being convicted in a bribery case by a Vigilance court in Odisha.

The Special Judge, Vigilance, Kataka, on Thursday convicted Amiya Kumar Behera, former ASI of Jenapur Police Station in Jajpur district and presently posted at Athagada Police Station in Kataka district, in a corruption case registered by Odisha Vigilance under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. The court also imposed a fine on the convict.

According to an official Vigilance statement, Behera had been charge-sheeted for demanding and accepting a bribe from a complainant in exchange for compromising a miscellaneous allegation lodged against him at Jenapur Police Station.

Following the conviction, Behera was taken into judicial custody to serve the sentence.

Odisha Vigilance said it will move the competent authority to initiate proceedings for Behera’s dismissal from service in accordance with the rules governing conviction in corruption cases.
