Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Transport Department has expanded its Intelligent Enforcement Management System (IEMS) to four additional highway corridors, with automated electronic challan (e-Challan) enforcement set to begin from August 1 as part of the state’s efforts to improve road safety and curb traffic violations.
The State Transport Authority (STA) said the technology-driven enforcement system has now been introduced on the Manguli-Sambalpur, Sambalpur-Raurkela, Brahmapur-Taptapani and Brahmapur-Bhanjanagar highway corridors.
According to the STA, the expansion has been undertaken following the directions of the Commerce and Transport Minister to strengthen road safety measures, improve compliance with traffic regulations and encourage responsible road user behaviour through advanced surveillance technology.
The IEMS, which is already operational on selected road stretches in the state, uses intelligent camera-based monitoring and automated analytics to identify traffic rule violations and generate evidence-backed e-Challans without manual intervention.
The system will detect offences such as overspeeding, riding two-wheelers without helmets and driving on the wrong side of the road. Each e-Challan will be accompanied by photographic evidence along with details including the vehicle registration number, date and time of the violation, location, applicable speed limit and the specific offence, ensuring transparency in the enforcement process.
The STA said the expansion is expected to promote greater traffic discipline, improve adherence to road safety regulations and contribute to reducing road accidents and fatalities across the state.
The authority has urged motorists to follow prescribed speed limits, wear helmets while riding two-wheelers, avoid wrong-side driving and comply with all provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act and related rules. Vehicle owners have also been advised to keep their registered mobile numbers and addresses updated to ensure timely receipt of e-Challan notifications.
