Kataka: Floodwaters from the swollen Mahanadi River have dealt a severe blow to commercial fish farming in Telenia village under Badamba block of Kataka district, with hundreds of fish found floating dead in inundated ponds and many more washed away by the strong currents.
The flooding submerged several fish ponds after the river overflowed, disrupting aquaculture activities in the village.
According to local residents, the sudden change in the water environment following the influx of floodwater led to the death of hundreds of fish, while a significant number were swept away.
The damage has left fish farmers facing losses estimated to be worth several lakhs of rupees, raising concerns over their livelihoods. Villagers have urged the district administration to provide compensation for the losses suffered due to the flooding.
Responding to the situation, the Badamba Tehsildar said a detailed assessment of the damage would be carried out after the floodwaters recede. Necessary assistance would be extended to the affected fish farmers based on the assessment, the official added.
