Bhubaneswar: Over 1.90 lakh domestic Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections have been provided across Odisha as part of the state’s expanding City Gas Distribution (CGD) network, Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi informed the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

In a written reply to a question by BJD Rajya Sabha MP Sasmit Patra, Gopi said the development of PNG connections, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations and pipeline infrastructure is being carried out by entities authorised by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB).

Odisha has been covered under 12 Geographical Areas (GAs) authorised by PNGRB for the development of CGD infrastructure across all districts of the state. As of May 31, 2026, authorised CGD entities have provided 1,90,551 domestic PNG connections, established 159 CNG stations and laid 9,040 inch-km of pipeline network across Odisha.

The progress has been achieved against the Minimum Work Programme (MWP) targets set for June 2033, which include providing 9,09,582 domestic PNG connections, setting up 247 CNG stations and developing 14,320 inch-km of pipeline infrastructure in the state.

District-wise data shows that Khordha has emerged as the leading district in Odisha in terms of domestic PNG connections, with 76,911 households connected, followed by Kataka with 37,996 connections.

Sundaragada has recorded 15,825 PNG connections, while Baragada and Jagatsinghpur have reported 11,292 and 11,236 connections, respectively. Sambalpur has 8,867 connections, Puri 8,163, Dhenkanal 7,885, Jharsuguda 5,235, Jajpur 2,220 and Anugola 1,166 connections.

Ganjam has reported 257 PNG connections, while Balangir has 38 connections. Several districts, including Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Mayurbhanj, Kendrapada, Kendujhar, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Boudh, Gajapati, Kandhamala, Subarnapur, Kalahandi, Nuapada and Rayagada, are at various stages of PNG network development.

Odisha’s CGD network has witnessed rapid growth over the last five years. The number of domestic PNG connections increased from 60,596 in March 2022 to 1,84,997 in March 2026.

During the same period, the number of CNG stations increased from 34 to 159, while pipeline infrastructure expanded from 2,990 inch-km to 8,821 inch-km.

Among major infrastructure developments, Khordha district has 24 operational CNG stations and 1,734 inch-km of pipeline network, while Kataka has 14 CNG stations and 945 inch-km of pipeline infrastructure.

The expansion of the CGD network is being undertaken by authorised entities, including Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), GAIL Gas Limited, Adani Total Gas Limited, GAIL India Limited and Megha City Gas Distribution Private Limited.

The Ministry stated that the rollout of CGD infrastructure is being implemented as per approved project plans and timelines prescribed by PNGRB.
