Bhubaneswar: With water levels rising in the Brahmani, Mahanadi and Baitarani rivers during the rainy season, the Rajnagar Forest Division has activated an emergency WhatsApp helpline (9938914101) and launched a massive door-to-door awareness campaign in vulnerable villages to prevent human-crocodile conflict.
Officials said the surge in floodwaters increases the possibility of crocodiles moving from riverbank areas towards human settlements and river ghats used by locals. To ensure public safety, forest department field staff are visiting flood-affected villages to inform residents about possible encounters and the precautionary measures to be followed.
During the campaign, people have been advised to avoid entering rivers, canals or drains unless absolutely necessary. Special caution has been urged while collecting water, fishing or bathing. Children have been told not to go near water bodies unattended, and extra care has been recommended while grazing or fetching water for domestic animals in crocodile-prone areas.
The Forest Department has appealed to residents to immediately report any sighting of crocodiles in residential areas or nearby water bodies on the WhatsApp helpline 9938914101 for prompt action by forest personnel.
The awareness drive is being conducted with the active participation of forest staff and local villagers to promote safe coexistence between humans and crocodiles.
The Odisha Forest, Environment and Climate Change Department has asked all residents, especially those living in riverine areas, to remain vigilant. It has requested people to follow the safety guidelines issued by the Forest Department and cooperate with forest personnel to ensure the safety of both human life and wildlife.
