Sundaragada: A 26-year-old farmer lost his life after being struck by lightning while working in his agricultural field during heavy rain in Sundaragada district on Friday afternoon.
The deceased has been identified as Pankaj Kalo of Amliyjor village under Shankarabaahal in Balishankara block.
According to reports, the area experienced heavy rainfall accompanied by frequent lightning around 4 p.m. Pankaj was working in his field when lightning struck him, leaving him unconscious on the spot.
Farmers working nearby, along with his family members, immediately rushed him to the District Headquarters Hospital in Sundargarh for treatment. However, doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Police from Talsara police station have registered an unnatural death case and initiated an investigation into the incident. The body will undergo post-mortem examination on Saturday before being handed over to the family.
The incident serves as another reminder of the dangers posed by lightning during the monsoon season, particularly for people working in open fields during thunderstorms.
