Sonpur: A seven-year-old student of the District Handicapped Welfare School, Sonpur died after allegedly slipping and falling into a ditch filled with water while washing his feet on Saturday evening, reports said.
The child was rescued and rushed to the Subarnapur District Headquarters Hospital in a critical condition. However, doctors declared him dead on arrival, reports added.
The deceased was among the mentally retarded students studying at the school, which has hundreds of students enrolled, according to sources.
Police seized the body and initiated an investigation into the incident. The exact circumstances leading to the child’s fall are yet to be ascertained.
Meanwhile, the incident has triggered allegations of negligence by the school staff responsible for the safety and supervision of the students.
