Beyond Hindenburg And The DoJ Case, Gautam Adani Puts Trust At The Heart Of Nation-Building

Ahmedabad: Two days after a US District Court in the Eastern District of New York permanently dismissed with prejudice the US Department of Justice’s (DoJ) criminal case against him, Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, said on Wednesday that the nearly two-year legal chapter had left him with a deeper sense of humility.

The experience, Gautam Adani said, reinforced his belief that one must stand firmly by one’s truth while allowing the judicial process to take its course with patience and dignity.

Addressing more than three lakh employees and partners across over 700 locations during the second edition of ‘Apni Baat, Apno Ke Saath’ on India’s upcoming 80th Independence Day celebrations, he reflected on the short seller Hindenburg’s allegations in 2023 and the subsequent DoJ proceedings.

But his message was not about the crises themselves. It was about the values that sustain enduring institutions through adversity and the responsibility they carry in building a Viksit Bharat.

Gautam Adani traced those convictions back to his own beginnings. Leaving home at 16 and starting life in Mumbai before building a business from the ground up taught him that trust cannot be demanded or inherited. It is earned over time through character, consistency and honouring one’s word.

Drawing on the metaphor of ‘Samudra Manthan’, Gautam Adani said every meaningful journey, whether of an individual, an institution or a nation, must pass through turbulence before revealing its true strength.

Those convictions shaped one of the Group’s defining decisions following the Hindenburg report. Despite being legally entitled to proceed with its fully subscribed Rs 20,000 crore Follow-on Public Offer (FPO), the Group chose to return investors’ money.

For Gautam Adani, the decision reflected a lesson inherited from his father: trust is greater than any legal right. Returning the FPO, he suggested, was ultimately about preserving confidence rather than exercising entitlement.

Describing the outcome of the DoJ proceedings as vindication, Gautam Adani reflected on them as a journey that strengthened his faith in the rule of law and reshaped his understanding of leadership, resilience and responsibility.

What stayed with him most, however, was not the courtroom but the quiet resolve of the people around him. While the proceedings dominated headlines, employees, workers, suppliers, contractors, vendors, and partners simply carried on with their work, building businesses, serving customers and delivering on commitments.

Engineers kept projects moving, teams remained focused on execution, and operations continued across the Group’s businesses. Gautam Adani credited that collective determination with carrying the organisation through one of the most closely watched chapters in its history.

That continuity was reflected in the Adani Group’s performance. The group’s capital expenditure (capex) last year reached Rs 1.53 lakh crore, among the highest by any Indian corporate. Investments continued across ports, airports, logistics, renewable energy, transmission, digital infrastructure, and manufacturing.

Yet, Gautam Adani argued that numbers tell only part of the story. His greatest source of pride, he said, is the Adani Parivar.

The address also carried an unmistakable note of gratitude. Gautam Adani recalled meeting strangers across the country who stopped him only to offer words of encouragement, shake his hand, or silently convey their support.

Gautam Adani also acknowledged those who criticised the Group, saying difficult questions had prompted introspection and reinforced the importance of remaining grounded.

Looking back, he said, what remained was gratitude — for those who stood by the Group, those who challenged it and the lessons the journey had left behind.

Looking ahead to the centenary celebrations of India’s Independence in 2047, Gautam Adani urged every employee and partner to ask a simple question: What will our generation be remembered for? He said history would judge India not only by the infrastructure it builds, but by the opportunities it creates, the communities it strengthens and the values it chooses to uphold.

The address closed with a message that reached beyond business. Institutions, Gautam Adani argued, are remembered less for the crises they face than for the values they protect through them.

As India moves towards becoming a Viksit Bharat, he said, the country’s defining legacy will rest not only on the infrastructure it builds, but on institutions that command trust, withstand adversity and leave future generations stronger than they found them.
