Kataka: Nischintakoili police on Sunday arrested the sixth and final accused in connection with the alleged gang rape of a 26-year-old mall employee at Sukarapada village under Nischintakoili police limits in Kataka district.
The accused, a resident of Kendrapada district, had allegedly been absconding since the incident. Police said he first fled to Kolkata and later moved to Visakhapatnam to evade arrest.
Acting on reliable information, a special police team tracked his movements and apprehended him near OMP Square in Kataka shortly after he arrived by train from Visakhapatnam.
With the latest arrest, all six accused named in the case have now been taken into custody. The five others had earlier been arrested and produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Nischintakoili.
According to the police, the incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday (August 12) when the victim, who works at a shopping mall in Bhubaneswar, was returning to her home in Kendrapada with a male friend along the Kataka–Chandbali State Highway.
As the man reportedly felt drowsy, the duo stopped their car near a petrol pump to rest. Police alleged that the six accused then smashed the car windows, forcibly abducted the pair in their own vehicle and took them to an isolated field at Aenda. The accused allegedly threw the man out of the vehicle before sexually assaulting the woman inside.
Police said further investigation into the case is underway.
