New Delhi: A 31-year-old M.Sc. Physics student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi allegedly died by suicide after jumping from the sixth floor of a building on the campus on Saturday morning.

According to police, a PCR call regarding a student allegedly having jumped from a building at the IIT Delhi campus was received at Kishangarh Police Station at around 8:33 a.m.

Police personnel immediately rushed to the spot, where the injured student was found and subsequently shifted to the IIT Delhi campus hospital. However, doctors declared him brought dead.

The crime scene investigation team and the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) Team were called to the spot for inspection and collection of evidence.

During the preliminary enquiry, police identified the deceased as a 31-year-old student of the M.Sc. Physics Department at IIT Delhi.

Further investigation revealed that the student had entered the IIT Delhi campus through the main gate at around 8 a.m. on Saturday. He subsequently went to the Lecture Hall Complex, took a lift to the sixth floor and allegedly jumped from the front side of the building.

Police said that during the enquiry conducted so far, no apparent injury marks other than those attributable to the fall have been noticed.

However, no suicide note has been recovered from the spot but a mobile phone was found in the pocket of the deceased and will be examined as per due procedure.

Police said that the counselling records and other relevant information from the institute are being obtained, while the circumstances surrounding the incident are being verified. Further legal action is being taken in accordance with the law.

The incident comes a day after a 19-year-old third-year B.Sc. Nursing student allegedly died by suicide by hanging in her hostel room in Delhi’s Rajinder Nagar area.

The student, a resident of Najafgarh, was found by her fellow students, who rushed her to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. The hospital subsequently informed the Rajinder Nagar Police Station about the incident.

A police team visited the hostel, while a crime scene investigation team was also called to examine the site. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding her death.
